Everyone has heard of these world-famous landmarks like the Coliseum in Rome, the incredible canals of Venice or even the breathtaking village of Positano on the Amalfi Coast. However, there is another place in Italy, almost frozen in time, entrenched in their traditions, where many travellers have never ventured off or discovered. Abruzzo is a place where you can take in some of the most beautiful mountainous landscapes. It is just 2 hours from Rome. Abruzzo features ancient castles off the edge of a cliff, landscapes, national parks and nature reserves. It is the greenest region in Europe. It is also known for its seaside, on the Trabocchi Coast, stretching along the stunning Adriatic Sea from Pescara to Vasto. Trabocchi were traditionally stilted fishing huts, but many have found new life as restaurants serving the freshest seafood imaginable.

How to get to Abruzzo? You can fly to the airport in the lively seaside city of Pescara. Then, you can simply go by car, train or bus from Rome, Ancona or Naples. You can also rent a car from trusted companies. Hiring a private driver is also an option if you are not into public transportation.

What is the weather like? Abruzzo has two different climates, along the coastline and the mountainous interior. The weather in Abruzzo varies depending on where you are and in what season. You can travel inland, leaving the beautiful Adriatic behind and into the heart of Abruzzo, just outside Sulmona. There are not as many donkeys as there used to be in Abruzzo. In the church of Madonna Delle Grazie, you can learn about the patron, San Domenico. He is the Saint of Cocullo and protects animal bites, including dogs, wolves, snakes, and many more. There is no definite historical information that there was a custom connected to the Pre-Roman god where the serpents came to honour this Saint in the past centuries. There is also a festival in honour of Saint Domenico that dates back to the pre-Roman times. On 1 May, the town swells from about 300 people to 30000.

In the heart of Gran Sasso National Park lies the small village of Capistrano. In 1934, the statue of the warrior of Capistrano, dating back to the 6th century BC, was unearthed. It is considered a funeral puppet for the king of the local Vestini tribe.

Abruzzo is the greenest region in the world, as one-third of its territory is set aside for three national parks and 38 protected nature reserves.
