According to business air travel statistics, business air travel has always been an essential part of how work runs. In 2019, global corporate travel hit a high score. Although more growth was expected, the industry as a whole was dramatically affected by the global pandemic in 2020. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, business air travel statistics largely changed, since countries began to lockdown.

A McKinsey report revealed that international travel has always grown throughout different crises since 2000, including, SARS, bird flu, swine flu…etc. However, international travel dramatically dropped by 65% because of the pandemic in 2020 with extreme effects across the world. The report shows that two-thirds of the world’s aviation fleet couldn’t fly since the world entered lockdown. Almost 18 airline companies declared bankruptcy in the first few months after the pandemic. As per Bloomberg, the biggest airlines declared a loss of $126 billion in 2020. It’s evaluated that they will go through losses of $48 billion in 2021. 

McKinsey notices that in 2020, total global business air travel expenses decreased by 52%. In the USA, corporate travel spending dropped by 71%, which is $94 billion. According to Deloitte, the fourth quarter of 2021 should witness business air travel growing 25-35% since 2019. Bloomberg states that companies mainly travel for client support and professional services reasons, presenting 30%. Sales and securing clients come next, presenting 25%, then, conferences and trade show presenting 20%, training and internal meetings, also presenting 20%, and finally commuting presenting 5%.

As per Certify, for business air travel budgets, the biggest part of the budget is spent on food at 21%, then, flights and miscellaneous costs come at 17%. Accommodation represents 13%. Then petrol, car rental, and other expenses come at the end of the list. Certify also declared that on average, companies expend just less than $1,000 for each employee for a domestic trip versus more than $2,500 for each employee for an international business trip.

Research indicates that 30% of workers will accept a lower salary and more business trips. According to McKinsey, employees who keep on business trips, are worried about quickly changing or cancelling flights and preserving social distancing on flights. 

The OAG Global Traveler Sentiment Survey declares that about half of the passengers are concerned with catching COVID-19, while on an aeroplane. At the same time, nearly 80% think that the most effective COVID-19 prevention method occurs if staff and all passengers wear face masks and shields. 

The report also noted that most respondents prefer travelling domestically than internationally.  

As per a Bloomberg article, Deutsche Bank predicts that their client-related business trips will go up to 90% of what they were pre-pandemic, in 2021. However, their internal meeting trips will only go up to 25-30% of what they were in 2019.
