The Origins and History of M&M’s World

M&M’s, the iconic button-shaped chocolates, have a storied history dating back to 1941. Created by Forrest Mars Sr., son of Mars Company founder Frank C. Mars, and Bruce Murrie, son of Hershey’s president William Murrie, the sweets were designed to provide American soldiers with a chocolate that could endure various climates without melting. The hard candy shell was the key innovation, leading to the famous tagline, “Melts in your mouth, not in your hand.”

The success of M&M’s led to their widespread popularity, and by the late 20th century, they were a global phenomenon. Capitalising on this success, Mars Inc. created dedicated retail spaces where fans could immerse themselves in the M&M brand. The first M&M’s World store opened in Las Vegas in 1997, followed by Orlando and New York locations. London, a major international city, was a natural choice for the first European flagship store, which opened in June 2011.
